What is Androgens

According to some medical studies, Androgens are a group of chemically related male sex hormones. It is one of a group of male sex hormones that stimulate development of testes and of male secondary sexual characteristics such as the external features of sexually mature men which is the facial and pubic hair.  Androgens are somehow produced naturally by the human body.

Androgens are commonly classified as steroid hormones. Testosterone is the most essential androgen in the body of all men although there are said to be several different types of androgens. Each androgen manages one or even more aspects of masculine maturation and function.  Androgens do not just control the male characteristics but these hormones do also exist and can be active as well in females.
Testosterone is the main reason why boys attain the characteristics of men sexually. This promotes the testes, penis and scrotum to grow and their voice gradually deepens. Body hairs are becoming apparent on the other parts of the body such as on the face, legs, armpits, and etc. During puberty, boys naturally grow taller thus, developing bigger and massive muscles in the shoulders, arms, thighs and legs that make them more look masculine physically.

Androgens permit ejaculation to start, typically between the ages of 11 to 15 and this explains why androgens play a major role in development during puberty, sustaining the production of sperm and supports the final phases of maturation of the sex organs.  The activity of androgen hormones in sperm production persists throughout adulthood.

Androgen hormones generated in the testicles are decidedly suspected to cause prostate cancer in men and have been proven to stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cell. Medical practitioners have come up with a treatment for prostate cancer that is thought to delay the progression of the illness. This treatment is known as androgen therapy; this type of therapy decreases androgen levels and definitely lessens the growth rate of prostate tumors. Androgen therapy is not capable of curing the cancer but it can surely hold down the movement towards further progression.

Androgens and hair Loss

Low androgens and female Hair Growth have a close-knit relationship. Since female pattern hair loss is caused by an excess of androgens, it only makes sense that a viable treatment option is to lower the levels of these “male” hormones.
